Vegan Protein as a Dairy Free Alternative to Whey
Written by Dana Yarn, RDLD
I have had a request for an alternative to whey protein due to dairy allergies. There are several other protein supplements out there as non-dairy alternatives but Hemp, rice or pea protein (also known as a vegan protein blend) is number one in my book. The sodium and sugar content is lower, which can be a challenge when looking for non-dairy alternatives. I also love hemp protein because it has high fiber content, which is important for a healthy heart.
Avoid soy protein due to the impact it has on hormone levels, soy mimic’s estrogen and this could put one at risk for estrogen dominance which could lead to increased health risk like cancer, and excess body fat.
It’s not a good idea to get your protein through supplementation alone. Lean meats such as chicken or fish are the purest way to absorb protein. I realize it can be a challenge trying to meet you protein needs with the typical 2 servings of lean meats that you eat at lunch and dinner. Vegan protein can be added to smoothies as snacks or breakfast to ensure that you are getting the correct amount of daily protein.
